'Resident Evil' Crosses $100M Domestic as Horror Reign Continues

The horror box office story of the fall just hit a milestone. Resident Evil, Zach Cregger's reboot of the video game franchise, crossed the $100 million mark domestically over the September 25-27 weekend, adding an estimated $23.3 million in its second frame for a domestic total of $103.5 million.

Internationally, the film added $27 million over the weekend, lifting its overseas total to $93 million and its global gross to $196.5 million. The second-weekend hold of 61 percent is a respectable showing for a horror title, a genre known for front-loaded openings and steep drops.

Directed by Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian and Weapons, the film has been widely praised as one of the best entries in the franchise's long history. Its success caps a remarkable run for the director, who has now delivered consecutive hits and established himself as one of the most bankable names in modern horror.
